D-PRESTON

As the old saying goes, it's grim up narth.

Well, true to form, today has got to have been the most miserable cycle yet. So, no Simon, there's no need to feel jealous about this trip!

I had a late start from Manchester after sorting out a few things, including a new front sprocket from Evans cycles. This meant a 35 mile pedal in the afternoon in constant rain - the conditions tested the resolve and the wet weather gear to the limit.

While the former held out (just!), sadly the latter did not. Soaked to the core, clearly gore tex is the only way forward. Because today's moral is you get what you pay for.

Altura is good, but not good enough. The bbb overshoes didn't fare too much better either - with hindsight, I may have been better off donning my wet suit. Even the helmet cover surrendered and decided to jump ship. Yet another piece of kit to replace.

The Ortlieb panniers however have lived up to their waterproof reputation. Despite bring totally saturated on the outside, everything seems nice and dry on the inside.

Never have I been so desperate to reach my destination and what a haven it turned out to be. Enjoying the kind hospitality of local pastor, Daf Meirion and his family, after a hot shower and some great grub, I have been able to start to dry off.

However, due to the weather and poor light, there's really very little in the way of scenic shots to share with you today, except one which offers perhaps an alternative method of transport - perhaps I'll make a trade in tomorrow on my way to Kendal.
